Souvenir is a project initiated by Jennie Guy and Claire Behan. For the occasion of No Soul for Sale, the 10th anniversary of the London Tate’s Turbine Hall (May 14 – 16, 2010), Behan and Guy distributed limited edition recipe souvenirs from Ireland.
Over a series of workshops hosted by St. Helena’s Resource Centre, Finglas, Dublin it became clear that asylum seekers do/can not cook for themselves. An emphatic decision was made to invite these 12 women to write, draw, edit, record and cook their recipes and come together for a Hospitality Day so that the group could express themselves culturally via the food that they made and shared.
A focus was given to the privilege of being able to cook, an act that is often taken for granted. When this privilege is restricted the gesture of being able to cook takes on a greater significance.
Souvenir is the third phase of a larger project called Here for Refuge, supported by Finglas for Diversity and Dublin City Council.
